Lough Erne Resort in Fermanagh has just kicked off its 10th anniversary year! And CUPA PIZARRAS’ is really proud to be part of it. Our Heavy 3 natural slate was used exclusively throughout the golf complex!
AN OUTSTANDING PROJECT
Lough Erne is a prestigious golf resort development in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, opened in September 2007. Taking inspiration from the scenery of Loch Lomond, the Nick Faldo designed international golf course sits hand in glove with the surrounding landscape.
This five-star resort is located on a hillside overlooking Castle Hume Lake. It comprises a sixty-bedroom luxury country manor styled hotel and twenty-five stunning lodges with feature towers which echo the medieval monastic architecture found in the area. This makes it the perfect setting for any event: it has even hosted the 2013 G8 summit!
WHY DID THE ARCHITECS SPECIFY SLATE?
Natural slate has an elegance that enhances any building and harmonises with any environment. CUPA PIZARRAS’ Natural Slate was thought to be the perfect choice for this ambitious project and has been used exclusively throughout Lough Erne.
I specified CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate for this development as it is not only hard-wearing and durable, it also looks fantastic. It is important that the resort blends in with its surroundings and the choice of roofing material was an essential part of that, so CUPA PIZARRAS was a natural choice.

Heavy 3, a blue-black slate with a rustic riven surface, is a natural material that is exceptionally hardwearing, being virtually impervious to the elements. It can last more than a lifetime and, once installed, maintenance costs are practically zero.
Furthermore, Ireland’s Atlantic weather means a thicker slate is required to protect the building against rain and wind. Heavy 3 is split to a thickness of between 7 and 10 mm making it the ideal roofing material.
Heavy 3 is regularly specified for projects within conservation areas, national parks, heritage sites and areas of outstanding natural beauty as an acceptable replacement to locally quarried slate due to its comparable quality and composition.
